Introduction

Achieving Great Health in 90 Days or less is one of the most inspiring live food and health book primers that I have seen. Bob McCauley distinctly understands the mystery of creating optimal vibrant health. He shares it through the medium of his own experience, which is the real foundation of healing.

He has isolated the fundamentals of health: becoming alkaline, raw foods, the use of super foods Spirulina and Chlorella, adequate hydration and ionized water, probiotics, exercise, and a positive mental attitude.

The power of healing is about the broad strokes, rather than the details or obsessing about health. This book is excellent for those making the transition into live foods. It helps people wake up into the practical reality of living a live food lifestyle. His discussion of live foods and the use of chlorella and Spirulina is one of the best I have seen. I personally also use the E3Live in addition to the other algae. The E3Live has the much needed long chain omega 3 DHA and EPA which is not available in the vegetarian world except for golden algae for DHA and purslane for EPA. It also stimulates stem cell production, and has an intensity of neurotransmitter precursors, which makes it particularly powerful for enhancing brain function.

Bob has a wonderful way with words to present the issues people face when they choose to be healthy. “Everyday when we awake, we do one of two things: improve our health or encourage disease.” The power of his health wisdom comes from his direct health experimentation over the years as well as from his role as a health talk show interviewer, which allowed him to tap into the wisdom of many of the worlds leading experts. I appreciate this book so much because he has summed up how to create high level wellness in one sentence and then simply, but eloquently takes the rest of the book to explain this one message. As he unfolds his message, we are treated to a delightful sharing of practical tips and insightful quotes that he has gathered over the years. He has simplified his approach into six components, which naturally detoxify and alkalize the body.

If you are sick it is because you allow yourself to remain sick. By that I mean that the human body is capable of curing itself of any disease. Unless you are terminally ill, the average person can Achieve Great Health in 90 days or less. In most cases, even those diagnosed as “terminally ill” can turn their health around in several months if they are determined to live at any cost.

We get sick and prematurely age ourselves by turning our bodies acidic. We turn ourselves acid by living on a primarily cooked-food diet, not properly hydrating our body, consuming substances such as processed foods that barely resemble anything nutritious, while at the same time doing almost nothing to alkalize ourselves. When we become acidic we are wide open to disease of any and all kinds. If we are sick, our bodies are acidic. If we are seriously ill, our body pH is dramatically lower than it ought to be. This is a dangerous, sometimes life-threatening situation that cannot be ignored. But it can easily be remedied if we become resolute about changing our health.

The protocol for permanently ridding the body of disease and living in true health is quite simple. We should only consume Spirulina and Chlorella , Raw Foods , Ionized Water and probiotics. We must also exercise regularly and maintain a positive mental attitude . Health is as simple as that. The following pages describe exactly how we can Achieve Great Health in only a few months time. This protocol can be followed by anyone, regardless of your current health situation. The better shape you are in, the easier it will be. All it takes is the desire to do so and the determination to see it through.

I have not by any means attempted to answer every question about health in this book, nor cover every conceivable health topic. Rather, this book paints broad strokes about how we can be as healthy as we can possibly be. Although the details of how the body actually works are nice to know, it certainly is not necessary if we only want to be healthy. The details are provided merely to support the arguments I pose in this book. How many of us would drive if we had to learn to dissemble and repair a car? Mechanics would be our chauffeurs if that were the case.

To be healthy, we only need to know what belongs in the body and what does not. Once we have implemented the simple lessons outlined in this book, true health will most certainly follow.

When I wrote my first book, Confessions of a Body Builder, Rejuvenating the Body with Spirulina, Chlorella, Raw Foods and Ionized Water (COABB), I was aware that I had not said everything about health I wanted or needed to. But I knew I had laid the foundation for the true road to Great Health. What I want to accomplish with this book is a further exploration of exactly what we need to do to Achieve Great Health, Perfect Health. The premise of writing this book was that I wanted nothing more than to seek the truth about how to be healthy; the following pages describe what I found.

Profound lifestyle changes are not easily implemented and that is what's required. Most of us are fundamentally resistant to change even though it is change that keeps us vital and invigorated, more than we ever realize.

I wrote this book for everyone, especially the average person who lives on a meat and potato, junk-food, fast-food, processed-food diet or perhaps likes to barbecue on the weekends. Many of us don't realize that the world of true health even exists, that it actually is a place you can take your life to if you chose. True health is found in the raw , not cooked world of food, and it is one seldom visited by most people.

As for the health conscious community at large, this book will make perfect sense to most of them because their minds are already open to new possibilities. Everyday when we wake, we do one of two things: improve our health or encourage disease. The choice is always our own.

Many questions have arisen about my health protocol since writing COABB and I have tried to answer them in this book. One of the most common questions has been: If I go with this protocol, how long will it take till I am healthy? The answer is 90 days or less, depending on how badly you want to be healthy. This can be achieved regardless of how sick you may be at the moment, short of being rived with some disease that has placed you at death's door. If you do not properly hydrate, detoxify and alkalize your body, you will never be healthy. It is simply impossible. Only algae, raw foods and Ionized Water can achieve this quickly, especially if you are an adult with a lifetime of accumulated toxic waste in your body that has completely acidified it.

What I mean by Great Health is robust health, the kind of health that only a few of us will ever experience. Simply moving to a Raw-food Diet will allow your body to remain healthy. But without the incredible rejuvenating, body-building nutrients of Spirulina and Chlorella, along with consuming Ionized Water and Probiotics , exercising daily and developing a Positive Mental Attitude, Great Heath is not possible.

This book is the culmination of my knowledge and experience with human health and how to get there. I am not a formally trained medical, health or nutritional professional in any way. What I know of health is what I have read, experienced and spoken with others about. I offer in these pages no medical advice, but rather guidance and ruminations about health. I know almost nothing about medicine because medicine does not lead to health. This book is essentially one person's opinion, that of my own. However, I challenge anyone to find flaw with the basic tenets of my health philosophy, which is that water and raw foods rule .


My Journey to Perfect Health

I got my first warning sign that I was heading for physical ruin in 1992 after a stressful move from New Jersey to Michigan . I became quite ill over a 12 hour period and had to be taken to the hospital. It was likely a kidney or gall stone, but they never determined exactly what it was. It happened again one year later. I was on the road to the demise of my health. I was a lacto-vegetarian; I consumed dairy products , but no meat at all. I understand now that I was destroying my body with a cooked-food diet that was not providing me with any rejuvenating nutrients and was slowly acidifying every inch of me. I was dying prematurely as does everyone who lives on a cooked-food diet.

Most people don't make it to 50 before they're on some kind of medication, which is the first white flag they throw up as they surrender themselves, piece by piece, to disease, premature aging and unnatural death. Once you submit yourself to medicine, medical procedures, surgery and allopathic doctors, you are giving up and allowing yourself to become a health lemming. Your friends and family have diseases just like yours; thus you assume that disease is an inevitable part of life. Everyone else eats cooked foods, goes to a doctor and gets pills, so if you don't something must be wrong with you.

The truth I have discovered over the last eight years is that when you flow with nature and do the things that nature demands of all living things, disease does not exist and the idea of living a “long life” of only 90 years will disappear. Science tells us that the human body is built to live at least 120 – 150 years, yet it is rare for anyone to reach that age. If we can indeed rejuvenate ourselves at a cellular level, meaning that our cells are constantly provided with sufficient water and nutrients, the body itself can theoretically live indefinitely. There are many intriguing notions and possibilities in considering this principle. I will leave it to you to speculate on what those possibilities could mean for you, but the conventional notion of a lifespan will seem silly to you by the time you've finished reading this book.

I am in my forties and have the body I had in my twenties. I can run like I did when I was in high school. I have gotten stronger and more limber since moving to this health protocol . I have more stamina and endurance than anyone I know who is my age or older. I look like a person ought to look for my age, i.e. youthful, not what we are accustomed to seeing in people my age. All these things are quite special, but I am not special. Anyone can do what I am doing. Anyone can take their life to the next level and beyond. Anyone can stop putting walls in their path if they chose to.

Changing your life in a fundamental way begins with self respect. If you have that, you have the intelligence and integrity to realize that our many appetites put us in a painful, early grave and we only cheat ourselves out of God 's most precious gift, our health and therefore our lives.

The cure for all disease is found at your local supermarket in the produce section. The cure for any disease will never be found in a laboratory and that is hard to accept because science has always dazzled us; and for many has become the answer to all our problems. Three things must be accomplished if we expect to cure ourselves of any disease. We must hydrate, alkalize and detoxify the body. It is the recurrent theme of this book because it is the recurrent theme of health. This book will tell you exactly how to accomplish this so that regardless of what disease you may have, you can rid it from your body.

Attaining my current level of health has been difficult, although I can hardly begin to describe to you how wonderful I feel each day. I have come far, but my journey to perfect health continues because there are always areas of our lives we can improve on. If you have not heard of the raw food lifestyle, then come with me and discover the incredible world of fresh foods and raw dishes that will at first seem alien to you, but will one day become your close friends. Open your heart and hear the message of perfect health that nature offers us. You will not be disappointed with the results.

Perfect health is the point when the body is totally regenerating itself every moment, when biological aging has stopped completely and each organ of the body is functioning to its capacity. Few of us ever truly achieve this. I am not there yet and still have far to go. But considering where I was and how I felt then compared to how I feel now, this sure feels like perfect health. I can't wait to experience the real thing.

You need to hydrate your body because there is nothing more important regarding human health than a properly hydrated body, which translates into sufficiently hydrated cells throughout the body. If the body's cells are not healthy, we cannot be healthy. Cellular health equals human health.

Ionized Water has four qualities that are perfect for the body's health: Antioxidant , Alkalinity, Hydration and Detoxification. Start slowly and increase the potency of the Ionized Water you consume until you are drinking 1.5 – 2 gallons per day. Drink it all day except around mealtime. An extra trip or two to the bathroom is an extraordinarily cheap price to pay for your most precious possession: your health. You are the only person who can consume enough water to start on the road back to the health you were born with, that which God intended you to have, not the body you have transformed it into from a lifetime of eating primarily dead foods that are acidic, dehydrating and void of any rejuvenating properties.

Hydration is the first step toward reversing chronic illnesses and strengthening the immune system . It is our first defense against disease and the very keystone of human health.

There is a certain calm and stillness that only water offers. It is impossible to sit by tranquil waters and not feel at peace. Herman Melville mused that “ Meditation and water are wedded for ever.” He could not have been more right. We came from the sea.

Spirulina and Chlorella Summary

The most powerful foods on earth are Spirulina Pacifica and Chlorella Pyrenoidosa. They compliment one another in many ways because they are completely different foods with different nutrients. Spirulina is an extremely pure food, 95% digestible, extremely high in the Vitamin B-complex, iron, calcium and essential fatty acids such as Gamma Linolenic Acid (GLA), which is excellent for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis or bursitis. Spirulina is an excellent food to consume before a workout because of the explosive energy it provides to the body.

Chlorella has incredible anti-cancer properties. Its unique fiber is great for the digestion, as well as heavy metal and synthetic toxin removal. It has large amounts of nucleic acids (RNA/DNA ), which, along with amino acids (protein), are the building blocks of our cells. Chlorella can even be used topically on cuts, scrapes, infections, even serious wounds, as can Spirulina .

The second step in Achieving Great Health is to add these superfoods to your diet. Start slowly, gradually increasing them until you reach a dosage of at least eight grams of each daily. (See Appendix: Spirulina, Chlorella & Water Dosages .) You can never consume too much Spirulina and Chlorella as long as they are raw and their enzymes are intact. As you increase your dosage, gradually reduce your intake of protein from traditional sources, such as meat , fish, eggs, soy and dairy products . Algae is best consumed with each meal because of its high protein content, the highest percentage of any foods known with 18 different amino acids that are in the proper ratio to one another. Protein must be consumed with everything you eat for proper digestion and nutrient absorption. Most vegetarians lack sufficient protein in their diet.

Great Health will be nearly impossible to achieve without these two powerful whole foods at the center of your diet.

Only a raw foodist has the ability to Achieve Great Health, perfect health, the kind of health most people only dream of. If you remain on a cooked-food diet, you will never truly be healthy even though the outward symptoms of disease may not manifest themselves for years to come. Disease always resides in the body of the cooked foodist whether the symptoms are there or not.

Everyone wants to be healthy. No one wants to be sick or even divulge they ever get sick. Sadly, most will remain sick because of their refusal to leave the cooked-food world behind and start putting in their body what naturally belongs in it, that which can only make them healthy. The body can cure itself of any disease. If you are sick it is because you allow yourself to remain sick. Hydration, alkalization and detoxification are the three keys to preventing and curing us of any disease. Nothing is more important to the body than water and there is no better water for the human body than Ionized Water . All cooked foods are acidic, poisonous and addictive. We eat them because we like their taste and because we have been conditioned all our lives to believe they are healthy for us. Raw foods are alkaline and rejuvenate the body by providing the body with nutrients that have not been either destroyed or chemically altered by cooking. Cooking is the greatest destroyer of our health. Raw foods contain enzymes which are responsible for every movement, action or thought of the human body and mind. Digestive difficulties (belching, bloating, sensitivity at the waist, intestinal gas, regurgitation, hiccups, lack or limitation of appetite, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, colic in children) may indicate vagus nerve problems and possible hiatus hernia syndrome, which can produce acid residue throughout the system. Hiatus hernia can quickly reduce necessary hydrochloric acid in the stomach. Without proper hydrochloric acid breakdown of foods, the foods become too acidic.
    
Liver
The liver has over three hundred functions, including processing acid toxins from the blood and producing numerous alkaline enzymes for the system and is your first line of defense against any poisons. All the nourishment obtained through the gastrointestinal tract enters the blood by way of the liver. The load on the liver is much heavier when acid waste products are constantly floating in the blood. If the liver becomes too congested with protein acid wastes, death is imminent.
    
Pancreas
The pancreas is highly dependent on correct alkaline diet. All aspects of pancreatic function reduce excess acidity and regulate blood sugar balance. To have proper blood sugar balance, you must maintain a primarily alkaline-forming diet.
    
Small Intestines
The Peyer's Patches, in the upper portion of the small intestines are crucial to life. They are essential for proper assimilation of food and producing lymphocytes for the lymphatic system's wide ranging nodal network. They also produce large amounts of the enzyme "chyle", which is a major alkalizing substance. The uninterrupted flow of chyle into the system is crucial. Too much acid waste production from acid-forming foods is a great burden on the Peyer's Patches, which lessens the production of chyle.
    
Kidneys
In an adult, about 1 liter of blood per minute passes through the kidneys. By executing their primary duty, the kidneys keep the blood alkaline and extract acid. Kidneys that are over-stressed with too much acidity create kidney stones, which are composed of waste acid cells and mineral salts that have become gummed together in a waste acid substance. Therefore, by reducing acid-forming products from entering the body, the chances are better that you can avoid this painful condition.
    
Colon
The colon must be kept clean of accumulated acid wastes. Poisons collect on the colon walls and in cases of diarrhea or constipation will harden and reabsorb into the bloodstream. Good bowel action (complete elimination) must be done at least 2 times per day.
    
Lymphatic System
There are 600-700 lymph glands in the body. Lymph fluid carries nutrition to the cells and removes acid waste products. Lymph fluid flows best in an alkaline environment. When the body is overly acidic, it slows, creating one of the most chronic, long-term, life-threatening situations. Gradually, the lymph dries and begins to form very tiny to very large adhesions throughout the tissues. These adhesions can interfere not only with lymph fluid but with blood flow as well. Hindered lymph flow increases tissue acid storage. Not drinking enough purified water will also slow the lymph. Waste products from foods that are not properly digested are reabsorbed into general circulation via the lymphatic ducts of the small intestine. In addition, bowel movements that do not completely clear the body of its daily poisons are also reabsorbed.


How Negative Emotions Create Acidity:
 
Have you ever been so upset with someone or something that you get an upset stomach? All negative emotions create an acidic environment. Have you ever heard anyone say you are letting your problems "eat away at you" or "get the best of you"?
 
Fear is the underlining cause of most disease. It will undermine your life and your health. Fear causes anger. Anger causes hate. Hate will consume you with continual suffering. Love and understanding cleanse and heal the body creating an alkaline environment within you.
 
What Can You Do?
 

1. Exercise
Moderate exercise is alkalizing to the body. Excessive exercise (past the point of exhaustion) can create an acidic problem due to lactic acid buildup. People who are acidic usually feel worse from exercise because their detoxification organs are not working properly due to excessive acid in the tissues. Yet without exercise, acid and toxin buildup are likely.
       
2. Quality Air
As the saying goes - "every step you take, every breath you take ...".
If your environment is polluted with chemicals, dust, smoke, pet dander, mold, micro-organisms, then much of your energy reserve will go just in detoxifying. Today, even in the forest and near the ocean, the amount of negative ions are much lower than they were only a few decades ago. Also, since we sealed buildings to conserve energy and started making our homes and furnishings with synthetic materials, the number of cases of asthma and chronic fatigue have risen dramatically.
       
3. Food Cobining
Food combining is key to creating an alkaline environment because when you combine properly you reduce putrefaction in the body creating a more alkaline condition.
       
4. Alkalising Dietary Supplementation
When you purchase supplements you must ask yourself what your goal is and will these supplements actually help alkalize and remove acid from your body. Green drinks are very helpful in filtering out toxins and acidity in the body.
       
5. Alkaline Diet
Eating an alkaline diet is very powerful in making everything else work better. In general, it is important to eat a diet that contains both acidic and alkalizing foods. People vary, but for most, the ideal diet is 75 percent alkalizing and 25 percent acidifying (foods by volume).

How to use DMSO to Relieve Pain, Increase Circulation, Repair Tissue Damage & Fight Degenerative Diseases

Background

DMSO - dimethyl sulfoxide - is a simple by-product of the wood industry and is a solvent that can be produced in industrial or pharmaceutical grade.  Sulphur, the 4th most abundant mineral in the human body and has a long history as a healing agent. For centuries mankind has soaked in sulphur rich, mineral hot springs to help heal a variety of ailments. DMSO has variously been called a 'miracle' compound capable of relieving pain, diminishing swelling, reducing inflammation, encouraging healing and restoring normal cell function.  One of the most well known and exotic properties of this solvent is its ability to penetrate living tissue and transport other medicines in their integral state deep into the body.  For this reason, DMSO has been used by many in the treatment of burns and sprains, sports injuries, paralysis, arthritis, cancer, scleroderma and many of the degenerative diseases.
 

American doctor, Stanley W Jacob has worked with DMSO for many years and is considered one of the foremost authorities on the substance in the world.  He states the following with regard to the therapeutic potential of DMSO: "We've barely scratched the surface [of DMSO's capabilities], for this is a new principle in medicine.  We've only had three new principles in our century - the antibiotic principle, the cortisone principle, and now the DMSO principle - and the DMSO principle is the only one of our generation.  Despite all the controversy, my guess is that history will record it this way."   
 

When US Governor George Wallace travelled across the country to find pain relief from DMSO administered by Dr Jacob, the reputation of this painkilling solvent got a tremendous boost2.  Wallace had been confined to a wheelchair since he was wounded in a 1972 assassination attempt while campaigning for the Democratic nomination for President at Laurel, Maryland.  Wallace's discomforture was located in his flank, a condition which reportedly disappeared by faithfully dabbing DMSO over the affected area.
 

DMSO Goes Public

On 23rd March 1980 and again on 6th July of that year, the popular television program 60 Minutes reported on DMSO.  In a presentation entitled "The Riddle of DMSO", presenter Mike Wallace covered the anecdotal patient history of the solvent and interviewed its main critics at the FDA.  As a result of the broadcast, which reached the homes of 70 million viewers, the switchboards at Dr Jacob's office and others associated with the program were immediately swamped with up to 10,000 people figuratively crying, "Save me!  Save me from my pain!"  Pain victims sought out other physicians around the United States who were known to prescribe DMSO.  They arrived in droves.  Telephones in the offices of doctors and pharmacies in Florida, Oregon, Louisiana and Nevada rang busily for several days following the Sunday evening broadcast of 60 Minutes.  A subsequent wire service report about the FDA's refusal to approve DMSO appeared around the country in Tuesday's newspapers.  In his program footnote, presenter Mike Wallace stated, "Tomorrow morning in Washington, the House Committee on Ageing begins an inquiry into why DMSO is not available to all Americans for any appropriate ailment, including plain and simple pain."  The numbers of letters and telephone calls that came into congressional offices enquiring about the cause of DMSO unavailability were massive.  A sampling of the letters sent to just one congressman, Claude Pepper of Florida, are found in chapter 4 of my book.
 

DMSO - Bane of the Establishment

Dimethyl sulfoxide has had a battered thirty-year history completely out of proportion to its true track record.  Officially, DMSO has never been approved for widespread medicinal use because medical authorities declare that the quality of medical trials and research on the substance has not been up to statutory requirements.  Dr J Richard Crout, the chief FDA opponent to DMSO, reported that double-blind tests3 were mandatory before approval would be forthcoming from his agency.  Yet researchers cannot conduct double-blind tests on DMSO because of the distinctive odour produced by the product after application.  Within a few minutes of putting it on your skin, you can taste it on your tongue; it penetrates the skin and runs through the bloodstream so effectively.  The alternative reason for not approving dimethyl sulfoxide, according to some DMSO proponents, could also be a simple question of economics: DMSO, painkiller extraordinary, is a common by-product of the wood industry and cannot be patented to great profit by the pharmaceutical industry.  Ironically, even drug companies have had their DMSO INDs turned down.  
 

The Medical Community Divided

Because of the general public outcry about its ban in the United States, and of course because of Mike Wallace and his 60 Minutes, DMSO has become a household word and medical-political cause célèbre.  Those doctors among us who have been using the drug for twenty-six to twenty-eight years never dreamed that it would become a focal point in the continuing battle between individual freedom and the power of government.  My colleagues and I have been criticized, ridiculed and even persecuted in some medical circles for promoting and using DMSO.  But I, and others like me, have come to the conclusion, having observed establishment thinking for forty years, that the only way a truly revolutionary treatment principle can be brought to the patient is by appealing to the general population through the information media.  It is for this reason that I wrote the book, DMSO - Nature's Healer.
 

In spite of the rumours, DMSO has not been found unsafe for humans.  Any side effects are merely minor irritations.  DMSO stops bacterial growth.  It relieves pain.  As a vasodilator, the drug enlarges small blood vessels, increasing the circulation to an area.  It softens scar tissue and soothes burns.  DMSO's anti-inflammatory activity relieves the swelling and inflammation of arthritis, bursitis, tendinitis, and other musculoskeletal injuries.  DMSO has been found to benefit human body cells, tissues and organs in ways not yet properly understood by medical science.  For this reason, I believe DMSO is the 21st century's newest healing principle with a very wide range of usefulness.  It represents an entirely different way of treating diseases.
 

DMSO and Cancer

Cancer seems to respond well to DMSO.  At Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, Charlotte Friend MD has turned cancerous cells into harmless, normal ones in the test tube by putting them in touch with the DMSO solutions.  DMSO is routinely used by alternative cancer clinics in Mexico to transport laetrile intravenously into the body.  Because of extremely promising clinical results, research is still ongoing on a privately funded basis into DMSO's potential role in the breaking up of tumours and the killing of metastatic cancer cells in its own right.  Yet the United States Food & Drug Administration and the UK Medicines Control Agency continue to forbid the advertising and retailing of DMSO for any medicinal purposes save one: for the treatment of the rare urinary bladder condition, interstitial cystitis.  
 

As reported in the Journal of Clinical Oncology in November 1988, twenty cancer patients with extravasation of anthracycline (destructive secretions from tissues of the toxic chemotherapeutic agent anthracycline onto the recipient's skin with the potential to form cancerous ulcers) were treated on a single-arm pilot study with topically-applied 99% DMSO and observed for three months with regular examinations and photographs.  DMSO was topically applied to approximately twice the surface area affected by the extravasation and allowed to air dry.  This was repeated every six hours for fourteen days.  In no patient did extravasation progress to cancerous ulceration or require surgical intervention, as is usual with this toxic chemotherapeutic agent for cancer.  The authors of this report suggest that ulceration was statistically likely to have occurred in at least 17% of these patients.  The only side effects reported from DMSO usage included a burning feeling on applications, subsequently associated with itch, redness, and mild scaling.  Six patients reported a characteristic breath odour associated with oysters.  The oncologists stated that topical DMSO appears to be a safe and effective treatment for the cancer-related condition, anthracycline extravasation5.
 

Numerous drugs dissolved in DMSO retain their therapeutic activity and their specific properties over a long period of time.  DMSO not only maintains but strengthens and multiplies the action of the drugs dissolved in it, thus permitting the administration of lower doses than normally required to obtain a satisfactory response.  In organ banks around the world, organs and tissues are stored and preserved in DMSO so that they are available for transplanting and grafting.  Tissues such as red blood corpuscles for transfusions and semen for artificial insemination are preserved in this manner.
 

As a penetrating carrier of drugs, DMSO is unsurpassed.  It easily carries necessary pharmaceuticals to any part of the body for therapeutic effect.  It passes through cellular membranes and tissues.  It is for this reason, among many others, that DMSO is properly described less as 'a drug' by those intimate with it, more as a new and little understood therapeutic principle.  As Dr Jacobs reported to an assembly of the American College of Advancement in Medicine, DMSO is more effective when used in conjunction with other medications which it can deliver throughout the body with spectacular ease.  This can occur even when DMSO is applied topically, and the other medication ingested orally or intravenously. 
 

For instance, DMSO will carry hydrocortisone or hexachlorophene into the deepest layers of the skin, producing a reservoir that remains for sixteen days and resists depletion by washing the skin with soap, water or alcohol.  DMSO mixed with hydrogen peroxide 9% solution has proven highly effective in the treatment of oral and genital herpes when applied topically to the affected areas.  Periodic outbreaks of the virus have been known in many cases to cease altogether with regular application.   
 

An interesting observation is that the application of DMSO to one affected joint or area often leads to pain relief in some other location.  DMSO has systemic effects.  It is a depressant to the central nervous system and, of course, it reaches all areas of the body when absorbed through the skin and into the bloodstream.
 

Perhaps the effect DMSO has had on the lives of countless thousands may be summed up by the case of Ruth Lewis of Sarasota, Florida.  Ruth, aged sixty-four, was in so much pain from rheumatoid arthritis that she couldn't walk without the aid of a four-legged walking device.  Pain had been her constant companion for over twenty years.  When she recently sustained a back injury, she was told by her physicians to have at least six months total bed rest.

Notes From Sergei and Valya

Sergei:
Dear children, adolescents, and adults, I wish there were some way that I could get this message out to every single one of you. A message that would touch your lives and have you see that happiness is not sold in little baggies or a 40 oz. glass bottle. I wish that there were some way to how you, my own generation, that we can all be happy and free without drugs. I wish I could stop you from hurting your body and make you see how much you will regret it later in life.

Most of all I wish that I could unite all of you and show you that every single one of you is beautiful and miraculous and that life would not be the same without you. Unfortunately, that is impossible, because the only way of teaching is actually not teaching at all! The only way I can get others to follow is by being a good example and sharing my story when asked. The words of even the wisest man are worth nothing if no one wants to hear them!

This is my story:
Before I ate raw food, I always wanted to be cool. I wore baggy pants with trendy names and had flashy skateboards and other toys, but for some reason I wasn't cool. The harder I tried, the less cool I was. When I started eating raw food, I hid it from my peers because I thought I would be even more un-cool. Later on,  however, I found out that in their eyes eating raw food actually made me pretty cool. In fact, I noticed that a person doesn't even have to be way different to be cool. All one needs in order to be cool is sincerity. Eating healthier made me more open. I stopped caring what people said and thought about me. I became more sincere and started speaking openly. People started noticing my sincerity and as a result I made new friends. When we are sincere, people gravitate toward us.

Are you or your children worried that by eating raw food you'll lose some friends? You might lose some friends but I promise you, you'll gain three times as many new, quality friends. If you are a raw fooder it is best if you didn't seclude yourself from the rest of the world and only hang out with raw fooders. You don't have to try to convert everybody to your "raw-legion." In fact, it would be un-cool for you to say, "Stop eating that crap; that pizza's going to kill you." If you did that, you wouldn't have any friends at all! I like what Howard F. Lyman, the author of the best-selling book Mad Cowboy says, "Don't tell people what you are doing unless they ask, and when they ask, you have thirty seconds to respond. That's about how long their attention lasts. If they want to know more they will research on their own or ask more."

Occasionally, people make fun of me for eating raw food, but they're not usually too hard-core. They never say anything like, "You're stupid." They rather make fun of me gently, like, "Have some milk; oh, I forgot you can't have that cause you're crazy." I just respond with, "Yeah, I am crazy, a crazy raw fooder that is! I only eat fruit," When they hear how I start  making fun of myself, they lose interest. In Ashland, people know me as the fruit boy, I just laugh with them. I'm not afraid to make fun of myself! Because I am healthy and happy, and I don't care what people think. It's only thoughts.

Valya:
I know that I would not be the same person I am today without changing my diet. Before going on raw foods, I was failing every subject in third grade except art. I couldn't read, so naturally I couldn't write. Learning geography was out of the question; I was quite happy in Denver Colorado. History? Yeah, right. That would really come in handy. Who cares about a bunch of dead guys? I was under the impression that THEY were going to teach me without my having to do anything. I had a hard time concentrating and could not remember anything. Fact: to learn, one must have the ability to remember. My energy would bounce from so high that I would be racing through the house back and forth, to so low that I wouldn't have the energy to change the channel on the remote control.

Before I went on raw food, I had asthma. Like many other sicknesses, asthma is considered incurable. I had trouble breathing at night and could not sleep. Whenever I ran, I felt like I was suffocating. My nose was always clogged, and I was pale no matter how much time I spent outside. My health was getting worse. My favorite food were milk and cheese. (This could be the reason my asthma got so bad). I used to cut a two-inch thick slice of cheese, put it between some wonder bread, and eat it.  Sometimes I'd eat the cheese without the bread. My family would go through two gallons of milk a day. My mother bought six gallons of milk at a time so that it would last for a while. My father was capable of eating three chickens in one sitting. At the age of nine, Sergei could eat an extra-large pizza all by himself! As you can imagine, we were all overweight. The doctors discovered that Sergei had juvenile diabetes, my dad had hyper thyroid, and my mother had a bad heart condition.

Health, however, was far from being my biggest problem. I was unhappy. I tried to entertain myself with movies, restaurants, and theme parks, but pleasure could never fill my feeling empty inside. My life was slowly zipping by. Every day was just like the day before. I would often wonder where all the time went. It seemed rather fast, like
something was missing. I dreamed of adventure and doing exciting things, but it all seemed pretty hopeless. I was going to get held back in school. As soon as I went on raw food, I switched to home schooling and started learning about the things I wanted to learn about. My grades started going way up. Learning became exciting for me. I learned by following my curiosity. I found that I was full of questions. It felt like a curtain had been lifted. My brain was filled with a sharp clarity. I began to remember things so much more easily. My energy became balanced. I could sit down and study now. Reading became my favorite thing to do. I understood that I was the only one who could really teach me anything. I saw thousands of opportunities like doors in front of me and I became aware that I had to open them myself, no one could do that for me. I stopped expecting to grow up some far off day and suddenly knew what I wanted to do with my life. I realized that I already was the person I was going to be the rest of my life. My life had already begun!

Before I went on raw food I had hard time breathing, especially in spring. When my first "raw" spring came I was suddenly aware I could breath through my nose! Many of my friends had colds, runny noses, and allergies. I used to have all of those, and I had nothing! At that moment, I felt that all my suffering with food cravings was worth it. I realized that I wanted to eat raw foods for the rest of my life. After I changed my diet, I never had another asthma attack. I lost some weight and started running in the mornings with my brother. I even got to the point where I could whistle while running! Raw food has changed my life. It has made me a healthier person. When a person is healthy, it's easier to be happy. My life is definitely easier than it would have been if I had not changed my diet. I don't ever need to worry about being sick with any of the thousands of diseases, viruses, or infections. I do not need braces, glasses, or Ritalin. I don't have headaches, toothaches, earaches, colds, allergies, acne, parasites, ADD, (Attention Deficit Disorder) anorexia, or obesity. Sometimes I feel guilty that I'm not sick because I have nothing to relate with other teenagers about. My friends like to talk about their symptoms and I have nothing to say! Last week I went to the dentist. He was so surprised. He told me that I had some of the best teeth he had ever seen in a teenager.

Sergei:
Back when I was nine years old, my sister and I would talk to each other about the day we turned eighteen. This day would be a special day because on this day, we would stop eating raw food. We would dream about what kind of food we would break the diet with. Corndogs, pizza, nachos, and crab were just some of the foods we were going to order on that magical day. As the years went by this dream seemed less and less appetizing until one day when I forgot about thought altogether. I started noticing that food did not run my life as before. No longer did my whole existence revolve around it. Spending less time eating gave me more free time during the day. I began using this time for observing others and myself. I noticed how my mother, who worked sixteen-hour days, would have a huge pile of dishes waiting for her at the end of the day, or how my father, who some days did twelve massages in a row, would still have to wash the floor in the kitchen before he passed out. I observed how I felt when I just sat around watching TV while my parents worked and I pretended like I didn't notice. I still remember the day I made up my mind to wash the dishes for my mom and the floor for my dad. It was the first time in my life that I didn't try to get away with doing as little a possible. I turned on the radio to my favorite station, put on some gloves, and washed those dishes until I could see my reflection in them. The floors always seemed to me like a lot of hard and dirty work, but appeared to me surprisingly easy to do. The reward for me came when my parents, who were so used to washing the dishes and floor, came into the kitchen and found that everything was already done. It was like someone zapped them with a stun gun. It was such an incredible feeling that I decided to help them out more often. It was after that day that I had my first major revelation: I, Sergei Boutenko, enjoyed helping people! I felt good inside every time I helped someone, so I naturally started doing it more often. Once again, I learned how things in life are not always as they seem. When I avoided work and tried to get happiness from entertainment, I was unhappy. When I began working to help others, I was no longer as bored and became happy...

About the Authour
Steve was pronounced "Sproutman" in a 1977 Vegetarian Times Magazine feature article that explored the why's and wherefores of his 100% sprout diet. While over 2 decades time, most diets change, Steve is still a believer in living foods and one of the most prominent spokespersons for sprouting.

Steve got interested in sprouts after a 20 year effort to correct chronic allergies and asthma with conventional medicine. He made dramatic changes in diet and within two months of eating a strict "living foods," vegetarian diet, his lifelong symptoms disappeared. He continued to practice a 100% raw foods diet (nothing cooked, packaged, canned, frozen or processed) for five years. During that time, he also experimented with other extreme diets such as fruitarianism (just fruit) and fasted for as long as 100 days.

This being one of the more niche books of the raw/living foods genre, it was not until I had been at least two years into it had I bothered to pick it up.

I was pleasantly surprised when I leafed through this gem. The recipes in here are out of this world. There are many little tidbits of information which are thrown in just for your information.

So, the beginning of the book is a preparation for your kitchen, what to have in the way of equipment and condiments that are frequently used. When that is out of the way, they jump right into the principles of what Lifefood actually is and some more information on why to choose Lifefood.

The recipe portion is quite expansive and inventive. I applaud Annie for her intuitive recipes and the massive abundance of flavour they bring to every meal. By far my favourite recipes have to be the "Sweet Thai Tomato Soup", which by the way I recommend with extra cayenne pepper, and the Teriyaki Pate, which is just fantastic on some sheets of nori with extra greens and cucumber or rolled up in a collard leaf.

The desserts are out of this world. Recipes like the "Phat Black Sorbet", which consists of dark cherries and other delectables, are just incredible and really make this book stand out.

The Lifefood fasts they outline are good and provide a solid platform for anyone to begin their experiences of purging, cleansing and fasting with. They are nutritional fasts, meaning you don't go hungry but are still giving your digestive system a rest.

The Lifefood fasts typically consist of a two week protocol where you consume only liquids (blended soups, smoothies, juices, sorbets, liquid salads and Lifefood beverages like Electrolyte Lemonade) for a period of two weeks while you do a couple liver Flushes and a couple Gallbladder flushes.

My personal experience with the Gallbladder flushes in incredible. I am so glad that I have done them. My digestion has improved immensely and my metabolism has gone up. I have already done two and am going to start the third one soon.

The other major cleanse this book outlines is a parasite flush. This regimine is an easy one that almost everyone should consider and consult their alternative healthcare practitioner (like a Licensed Accupunctureist, a Naturopath or a Chiropractor) with. I highly suggest it and have noticed great improvement since starting it.

Overall I believe that Annie Padden Jubb and David Jubb have done a wonderful job on this book. Their knowledge of recipe synergy, knowledge of colloidal physiology and overall understanding of esoteric herbalism makes me give this book a five star rating.

If you wish to get all you can out of this book, make sure you pick up David Jubb's other books "Secrets to an Alkaline Body" and "Jubb's Cell Rejuvenation - Colloidal Biology: A Symbiosis".

This may be one of the most important books you add to your library when it comes to overall understanding of your recipe choices and your health.

For example, she explains, "A wonderful secret of raw foods preparation is to serve soup in a warmed bowl. It allows the flavors to bloom a little bit more and keeps the soup warm without having to heat the soup to unhealthful temperatures upon serving." For readers who don't mind lukewarm bisque, or the significant effort that goes into preparing it, this book offers nice variety and valuable information.

Looking through the pages, we were dazzled by the gorgeous photography, layout design, and food styling displayed on nearly every page. Many of the photos zoom in to show fruits or vegetables that are larger than life. The colors are brilliant and display Elysa's finished dish to perfection. Our only disappointment with the book is that it lacked a standard index so necessary for quickly locating a recipe by name. Living With Green Power is an outstanding book that ought to be a companion to the Green Power/Green Life/Green Star/Solo Star juicer.

We highly recommend this book to everyone buying a Green Star & Solo Star juicer.

As the author of a raw food book myself, I have read nearly every raw book out there. The great thing about Jennifer's book is the simplicity of her recipes. I can whip up one of her dishes in ten to twenty minutes (depending on my familiarity with it) and often that includes the clean up time.

In this book, each recipe has a handy listing of ingredients, a list of equipment necessary, and an "ahead of time" section. Many times I have decided to make a recipe when I realized I couldn't do it because I was supposed to have sprouted some seeds or soaked some nuts overnight. With this recipe book, we are warned of what preparation should be made ahead of time.

At the beginning of the book is a handy listing of ingredients to have handy at all times in your cupboard. These range from the norm (ex: spices) to the obscure (ex: agar flakes, a vegetarian substitute for gelatin). There is also a list of kitchen equipment, serving ware, and even techniques (ex: tips on how to open a coconut and cut certain fruits).

Jennifer starts out giving recipes for the "basics." These are items that will later combine in different recipes and include yummy frostings and creams (such as "Vanilla Cashew Cream"), sauces (like "Caramel Sauce", and crusts (like "Chocolate Cookie Crust"). Next comes a chapter for each of the following categories of desserts: fruit desserts; sorbets, ice creams and sundaes; cakes, cookies and bars; pies and tarts; creamy desserts; and candy. There are stunning colored photos sprinkled throughout to motivate us to get going!

People who have little experience eating raw will be amazed: These recipes will make their cooked counterparts seem so tame.

I just made the spice cake with vanilla cashew cream for a topping, a huge hit with my husband. I can't wait to make the key lime tart, coffee ice cream, chocolate candy cups, pine nut caramels and summer fruit trifle. The monthly raw food potluck group is going to love me!
You don't have to be a vegan to love this book. I LOVE it because we camp and backpack a lot and like making desserts that require no cooking.

The nice thing about the book is it has a huge variety of all season desserts, that even a non vegan would like. Love how the author begins on page 4 by listing all the ingredients that will be listed somewhere in the recipes, which allows a person to plan well for future dessert making. Starting on page 7 the equipment needed is listed and explained. The only thing I would have liked would have been substitutes that could be used. Like with a blender. Someone could invest in a food processor and use their blender blade, and a food processor is a multi use machine that takes up less kitchen space. And a food processor with a variety of blades can also do the job of a mandoline. A mandoline can be a tad pricey if you want one that will last.

And while I did invest in an Excalibur dehydrator, one need not buy a food dehydrator, since a mesh cookie cooler rack set on the oven rack and the temp set at 200* can dry food slow over night or all day. Same with page 10 where she says for dish's that one needs plates that are white and of various sizes. Use whatever plates you have .While I have no problem acquiring items like Agar flakes, agave syrup, carob powder, rose water,spy lecithin powder, and whole vanilla beans, some people in more rural areas or those without access to health food and natural food sections may have more difficulty.

The Chocolate Cake with Fudge Frosting on page 74-75 was excellent. The Jumble Berry Upside Down cake on page 72 is great since you can use pineapple, blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, which makes this a very in season dessert. Try the Ginger Spice cookies on page 81 are cookies kids and adults would love.

This book as well as her others are very different from the typical American raw food book. Being from the U.K. there is an entire different feeling to her books where American raw books (I have over 30) are often repeats of a theme.

Raw Magic - an extract

There are some foods that have the power to change your life. There are certain foods that when you eat them, your body is in heaven, your cells start singing, your mind becomes ecstatic. "Yes," they cry in unison, "Yes, these are the foods that I have been waiting for. These are the foods that I have been craving, that my body has been missing my whole life." Sometimes, it is a particular nutrient you have been lacking. But more often with these foods it is their synergistic properties. They have a magical energy which comes not only from the nutritional combination they contain, but from the way they are grown, the lands they are from, their history. Many of them are sacred plants in their countries of origin.

There are many amazing foods I have omitted from this book, foods that are more commonly recognised as superfoods: vegetables like broccoli, kale and cucumbers, fruits like cranberries, blueberries and grapefruit, sprouts like lentils, sunflower or alfalfa. I was tempted to include avocadoes and olives, buckwheat and oats, all foods I eat on a daily basis. But these are foods that most of us are familiar with, and if you are not then there are plenty of books out there that do cover them. This book is about the new breed of superfoods which are unique to the West in the 21st century. Never before have we had access to such a wide variety of plant foods. Some of them we are accustomed to in different forms, like cacao; others have been around for a few decades now, like Spirulina; some are widely known in their country of origin, but novel to the UK, like goji berries; and some others are utterly brand new to us, like purple corn. When I was a child, avocadoes and kiwis were considered exotic, now they are standard fare in every shopping basket. I believe that such is the potency and vitality of the foods in this book that as people catch on to them, they are going to revolutionise the way we eat, shop and live.

These foods are transformative foods. By eating such high potency foods they change the very nature of our reality. They affect our consciousness and raise our energetic level to a degree that has profound implications on all areas of our lives. It is not possible to eat these foods on a daily basis and not feel altered. We live in a culture which is intrinsically false; fuelled on junk food, media lies, false gods and political whores, we have forgotten how to be our true selves. It is a scary thing to do, to step into our truth and reclaim our birthright when we have been taught our whole lives to avoid truth at all costs, to keep up the facades and not rock the boat. But the more of us who make these choices, the easier it becomes. And the more we attract into our lives people who have made the same choices and appreciate us for who we honestly are.

Rocking the boat is what we are here to do! Isn't it exciting and exhilarating when you stand up for what you truly believe in? Our time has come, and the old ways are not working anymore. Paradigms are crumbling and new ones are rising in their place. As we understand eternal truths, we see the world for what it is, and understand how desperately things need to change. We align with our higher purpose, the divine intelligence, and see what our life's path is. What mission have we been given? What is our role here at this time? It is to wake the world up, to guide humanity through the massive shifts and changes that are taking place. And of course, that starts with ourselves. We must awaken ourselves, and we must keep the balance between being fully awake i.e. masters of our own reality, knowing that we create everything with our own energy, taking full responsibility for our lives as a manifestation of our own inner state of being; and between being of service, helping to awaken the sleeping masses, and doing everything we can to help people through these times. And you know what the best part is? It's fun. Believe it or not, the universe actually wants us to be happy, it doesn't want us to suffer. And the more we work with the universe, the happier we become, the less we suffer.

Question: Tell us about the goji berry. What is in it? How about the cacao bean? What is in cacao? Isn’t this the food that we make chocolate out of?

David Wolfe: The goji berry is a complete protein source with extraordinary levels of antioxidants, levels of carotenes (according to studies, the more carotenes you eat, the longer you live) which have been shown to be present in primates. The goji berry is easy to eat for people of all ages. It also assists with the digestion of other food. It is considered the number one medicinal herb in Chinese medicine--which has a 5,000 year history of about 8,000 herbs. It improves our ability to secrete HGH naturally and it the only food known to do so.

Cacao has a higher concentration of magnesium, chromium, iron, and antioxidants than any food in the world. Cacao is also exceedingly rich in copper, zinc, and manganese. It was growing up on one of the many dairy farms of the rural American landscape, long before the China Study had taken place, and yet longer before the book was written, that the young T. Colin Campbell formed the views that would shape the early portion of his career.

Cow's milk, "Nature's most perfect food," was central to the existence of his family and community. Most of the food that Campbell's family ate they produced themselves. Campbell milked cows from the age of five through his college years. He studied animal nutrition at Cornell, and did his PhD research on ways to make cows and sheep grow faster so the American food supply could be pumped up with more and more protein.1

Fast forward to the present. Campbell is now on the advisory board of the Physician's Committee for Responsible Medicine,2 which describes itself as "a nonprofit organization that promotes preventive medicine, conducts clinical research, and encourages higher standards for ethics and effectiveness in research,"3 but whose opposition to the use of animal foods reflects its ties to People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and other animal rights groups.4


The China Study Hits Shelves

Campbell's new book The China Study: Startling Implications for Diet, Weight Loss, and Long-Term Health hit shelves in January 2005 and details the turning points in his post-graduate research that led him to become a famed opponent of animal foods and an advocate of the vegan diet.

It takes the reader on a tour through Campbell's early animal experiments, which he interpreted to implicate animal protein as a primary cause of cancer, through the massive epidemiological study after which the book was named.

Only 39 of 350 pages are actually devoted to the China Study. The bold statement on page 132 that "eating foods that contain any cholesterol above 0 mg is unhealthy,"5 is drawn from a broad — and highly selective — pool of research. Yet chapter after chapter reveals a heavy bias and selectivity with which Campbell conducted, interpreted, and presents his research.

Dietary Protein and Cancer

The first strike against the pro-protein mantra Campbell had inherited from his nutritional forbears came while he was studying the relationship between aflatoxin (AF), a mold-related contaminant often found in peanut butter, and cancer in the Philippines.

Campbell was informed by a colleague that, although the areas with the highest consumption of peanut butter had the highest incidence of liver cancer, it was the children of the "best-fed families," who consumed the most protein, who were getting liver cancer.

Whether the best-fed Pilipino families ate the many staples of modern affluent diets like refined breads and sugars isn't mentioned.6

This observation was corroborated by a study published in "an obscure medical journal," that fed AF to two groups of rats, one consuming a 5% protein diet, one consuming a 20% protein diet, in which every rat in the latter group got liver cancer or its precursor lesions, and none in the former group got liver cancer or precursor lesions.7 Campbell went on to investigate the possible relationship between nutritional factors, including protein, and cancer, a study that proceeded for 19 years with NIH funding.8 His conclusion was revolutionary and provocative: while chemical carcinogens may initiate the cancer process, dietary promoters and anti-promoters control the promotion of cancer foci,9 and it is nutritional factors, not chemical carcinogens, that are the ultimate deciding factors in the development of cancer.10

Yet the 19 years of research into this project leave us with more questions than answers, and have left T. Colin Campbell with a foundation of unsupported conclusions upon which he has built his tower of vegan propaganda.

Campbell began his studies using AF as an initiator of cancer foci and the milk protein casein as the promoter protein of study. His results corroborated the earlier results of other researchers: a dose-response curve existed for AF and cancer on a 20% casein diet, but disappeared on a 5% casein diet.11

He found that adjusting the protein intake of the same rats could turn cancer promotion on and off as if with a switch,12 and found casein to have the same effect when other cancer initiators, such as the hepatitis B virus, were used.13 Rather than throwing a blanket accusation at all protein, Campbell acknowledged that the study of other proteins would be required before generalizing, just as the study of other cancer initiators would be required before generalizing to them. Wheat and soy protein were both studied in lieu of casein, and both were found not to have the cancer-promoting effect of casein.14

Amazingly, Campbell's reluctance to make unwarranted generalizations ends here.

After briefly describing some research finding a protective effect of carotenoids against cancer, Campbell concludes this chapter of The China Study by noting the following overarching pattern: "nutrients from animal-based foods increased tumor development while nutrients from plant-based foods decreased tumor development."15 (His italics.)

Campbell Jumps the Gun...

The generalization from the milk protein casein to all "nutrients from animal-based foods" is clearly unwarranted. If Campbell took caution to study the issue further before generalizing from casein to all proteins, why didn't he take the same caution before generalizing from casein to all animal proteins or all animal nutrients?

Indeed, in later pages of The China Study, Campbell acknowledges that he is making this generalization: ". . . casein, and very likely all animal proteins, may be the most relevant cancer-causing substances that we consume."16 Why this generalization is "very likely" to be true is left unexplained.

Campbell is aware that casein has been uniquely implicated in health problems, and dedicates an entire chapter of The China Study to casein's capacity to generate autoimmune diseases.17 Whey protein appears to have a protective effect against colon cancer that casein does not have.18 Any effect of casein, then, cannot be generalized to other milk proteins, let alone all animal proteins.

Other questions, such as what effect different types of processing have on casein's capacity to promote tumor growth, remain unanswered. Pasteurization, low-temperature dehydration, high-temperature spray-drying (which creates carcinogens), and fermentation all affect the structure of casein differently and thereby would affect its physiological behavior.

What powdered, isolated casein does to rats tells us little about what traditionally consumed forms of milk will do to humans and tells us nothing that we can generalize to all "animal nutrients." Furthermore, Campbell fails to address the problems of vitamin A depletion from excess isolated protein, unsupported by the nutrient-dense fats which accompany protein foods in nature.

Update From September, 2010: Campbell never tells us in The China Study that the same low-casein diet that protected the rats against aflatoxin-induced cancer actually dramatically increased the vulnerability of these rats to the acute toxicity of aflatoxin, or that the high-casein diets provided tbe rats with dramatic protection against cancer when they were fed before or during the aflatoxin dosing rather than after. He also never tells us that casein and plant proteins behaved exactly the same when the limiting amino acid of the specific plant protein was provided, as would occur on a diet of mixed foods. Lessons from China — The China Project Itself

In the early 1980s, along with Chen Junshi, Li Junyao, and Richard Peto, T. Colin Campbell presided over the mammoth epidemiological study referred to as the China Project, or China Study. The New York Times called the China Study "the Grand Prix of epidemiology," and it gathered data on 367 variables across sixty-five counties and 6,500 adults.

Amazingly, from the more than 8,000 statistically significant associations found in the China Study, Campbell was able to draw a single unifying principle:

"People who ate the most animal-based foods got the most chronic disease. . . . People who ate the most plant-based foods were the healthiest and tended to avoid chronic disease." 19

The study utilized recall questionnaires, direct observation and measurement of intakes over a three-day period, and blood samples.20 The blood samples were combined into large pools for each village and each sex.21

This had the drawback of dramatically decreasing the number of data points relative to the enormous number of correlations being generated, and the advantage of allowing the blood to be tested for many, many more variables than would be testable using individual samples.

One of the benefits of the China Study's design was that the genetic stock of the study subjects had little variation, while there was wide variation among cancer and other disease rates.

While the dietary surveys were conducted in the autumn of 1983,22 the mortality rates were taken a decade earlier in 1973 through 1975. 23 Rural areas were thus deliberately selected to ensure that the people in the area had for the most part lived in the area all their lives and had been eating the same foods native and traditional to that area, so that the mortality data would reliably match the dietary data.

One of the drawbacks of the China Study was that nutrient intakes were determined from food composition tables, rather than measured directly from foods.24 This disallowed any consideration of differences in nutrient composition of foods in different areas due to soil quality, which was a primary theme of Weston Price's research.

Another drawback of the China Study was that the questionnaire did not adequately account for the diversity of animal foods. Questions about the frequency of consumption of sea food, meat, eggs, and milk were included, but questions about organ meats and insects were not included on the questionnaire, nor was fish differentiated from shell fish, despite the very different nutrient profiles of these foods.25

Additionally, the autumn dietary survey could not take into account foods that were not in season at the time.

Does the data match up?

What is most shocking about the China Study is not what it found, but the contrast between Campbell's representation of its findings in The China Study, and the data contained within the original monograph.

Campbell summarizes the 8,000 statistically significant correlations found in the China Study in the following statement: "people who ate the most animal-based foods got the most chronic disease."26 He also claims that, although it is "somewhat difficult" to "show that animal-based food intake relates to overall cancer rates," that nevertheless, "animal protein intake was convincingly associated in the China Study with the prevalence of cancer in families."27

But the actual data from the original publication paints a different picture. Figure 1 shows selected correlations between macronutrients and cancer mortality. Most of them are not statistically significant, which means that the probability the correlation is due to chance is greater than five percent.

It is interesting to see, however, the general picture that emerges. Sugar, soluble carbohydrates, and fiber all have correlations with cancer mortality about seven times the magnitude of that with animal protein, and total fat and fat as a percentage of calories were both negatively correlated with cancer mortality.

The only statistically significant association between intake of a macronutrient and cancer mortality was a modest negative correlation with total oil and fat intake as measured on the questionnaire. As an interesting aside, there was a highly significant negative correlation between cancer mortality and home-made cigarettes!28 Campbell's case for the association between animal foods and cancer within the China Study is embedded within an endnote. Campbell states: "Every single animal protein-related blood biomarker is significantly associated with the amount of cancer in a family."29

Following the associated endnote, these biomarkers were "plasma copper, urea nitrogen, estradiol, prolactin, testosterone, and, inversely, sex hormone binding globulin, each of which has been known to be associated with animal protein intake from previous studies."30 Since Campbell does not cite these "previous studies," the reader is left in the dark regarding the reliability of his assumptions. Blood biomarkers are generally associated with food intake patterns, rather than specific foods. Since food intake patterns differ in different populations, an association found between a biomarker in one population cannot necessarily be generalized to another.31

For example, people who eat more whole grains in a given population might have higher levels of vitamin C, even though whole grains do not contain vitamin C. This would be true in one population where people who eat whole grains tend to eat more fruits and vegetables, but untrue in another population.

In other words, if the mysterious "previous studies" that Campbell doesn't cite were conducted in America, their data would be irrelevant to a study conducted in China, where food intake patterns could be very different.

As we will see below, the China Study's own data indicated that these were not reliable biomarkers. It isn't at all clear why this roundabout and extremely unreliable way of measuring animal protein consumption is superior to the direct methods of the study, such as the food questionnaire and the dietary observations-- especially when they directly contradict each other!

Of the biomarkers measured, estradiol only had a statistically significant relationship with animal protein in women under 45,where the correlation was positive as is true for sex hormone-binding globulin, both of which had negative correlations in women aged 55-64.

There was no statistically significant relationship between animal protein and testosterone in men of any age, which were negatively correlated in all age groups, nor in females except those aged 55-64, where the correlation was positive. Plasma prolactin was only statistically significantly related to animal protein consumption in the oldest group of females (positively) and was negatively correlated in other age groups.32

Only urea nitrogen and copper were consistent and significant indicators of animal protein consumption, and of these two only copper was significantly related to cancer mortality. 33 It is difficult to see how Campbell can so emphatically draw the conclusion that animal foods are the cause of most diseases from this data.

China Study Tells Only Half the Story?

By the title, one would expect The China Study to contain objective and complete information derived from the China Study. Page one touts "real science" above "junk science" and "fad diets." Yet Campbell consistently presents only half the story -- at best -- through the duration of the book.

In Part II, Campbell presents evidence incriminating animal products as the cause of nearly every disease. He cites several health care practitioners, including Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn Jr. and Dr. Dean Ornish, who claim to have been able to reverse heart disease with plant-based diets,34 and cites the Papua New Guinea Highlanders as an example of a traditional society without the occurrence of heart disease.

Yet the pages of The China Study make no mention of George Mann's and other researcher's extensive study of the heart-healthy Masai or the healthy primitives of Weston Price, who relied extensively on fatty animal foods.

That the programs of Ornish and Esselstyn involved more than abstention from animal foods-- especially the program of Ornish, of which diet is only a small part-- is not seen as a confounding factor that detracts from our ability to incriminate animal foods in heart disease. Nor does he bother to mention the cannibalism or the swollen bellies of children that accompanies the protein-starved diet of the New Guinea highlands.35 In The China Study's discussion of diabetes, Dr. Campbell concludes that "high-fiber, whole, plant-based foods protect against diabetes, and high-fat, high-protein, animal-based foods promote diabetes."36 He discusses the possible role of cow's milk (an animal food) in causing type one diabetes via an autoimmune reaction,37 but makes no mention that wheat gluten (a plant food) has been implicated in Type 1 diabetes by a similar process.38 He similarly fails to mention the role of fructose consumption (from plant foods) in causing insulin resistance,39, 40 and the increase in high fructose corn syrup consumption that has paralleled the increase in diabetes.

Campbell discusses the suspected role of animal foods in causing prostate cancer, but makes no mention of the potent preventative role current research is attributing to vitamin A, a nutrient found in animal foods.42 He devotes 19 pages of The China Study to discussing the role of cow's milk in causing autoimmune diseases,43 but zero pages to the role of wheat gluten in causing autoimmune diseases.44

Campbell reiterates the myth that dietary fat and cholesterol contribute to Alzheimer's and discusses the potential protective effects of plant foods,45 but makes no mention of the protective effect of DHA, an animal-based nutrient, that is currently being investigated and has been known about for years.46

The China Study frequently ignores the contribution of animal foods to certain classes of nutrients, such as B vitamins and carotenes. Both classes of nutrients are assumed to come from plant foods, despite egg yolks and milk from pastured animals being a good source of carotenes, and the high B vitamin content of liver.

The most curious of such statements is one found on page 220, where Campbell declares, "Folic acid is a compound derived exclusively from plant-based foods such as green and leafy vegetables."47 (My italics.) This is a fascinating statement, considering that chicken liver contains 5.76 mcg/g of folate, compared to 1.46 mcg/g for spinach!48 A cursory look through the USDA database reveals that the most folate-dense foods are organ meats.

The China Study contains many excellent points in its criticism of the health care system, the overemphasis on reductionism in nutritional research, the influence of industry on research, and the necessity of obtaining nutrients from foods. But its bias against animal products and in favor of veganism permeates every chapter and every page.

Less than a page of comments are spent in total discussing the harms of refined carbohydrate products. Campbell exercises caution when generalizing from casein to plant proteins, but freely generalizes from casein to animal protein. He entirely ignores the role of wheat gluten, a plant product, in autoimmune diseases, so he can emphasize the role of milk protein, an animal product. The book, while not entirely without value, is not about the China Study, nor is it a comprehensive look at the current state of health research. It would be more aptly titled, A Comprehensive Case for the Vegan Diet, and the reader should be cautioned that the evidence is selected, presented, and interpreted with the goal of making that case in mind.

In fact, eight of the top ten causes of death in America today are (not to mention that diet is obviously the cause of the obesity of 60 percent of Americans). The simple secrets to finding the right combinations are what The pH Miracle is all about.

    Even mainstream medicine agrees: "Foods contain nutrients essential for normal metabolic function, and when problems arise, they result from imbalances in nutrient intake and from harmful interaction with other factors.     Since that landmark report from C. Everett Koop (and even before, depending on the circles you run in), Americans have been following one diet craze after another not only in an attempt to drop the excess baggage most of us are carrying around but also as a way to find our way back to good health. The result? We (as a country) are fatter than ever. And we're certainly no healthier.

    The problem is that while diet is the key not only to slimness but also to overall health and well-being, it has to be a diet that properly balances our body chemistry. But each and every one of the diets Americans have tried—including not just the "average American diet" but also such supposedly healthful regimens as low-fat diets, the food pyramid, and vegetarianism — create wildly imbalanced body chemistry. Even if one way of eating does get rid of extra pounds (usually temporarily) or lower cholesterol levels or lessen digestive trouble for some people, it does not fulfill the promise of simple good health. We're so used to our modern medical machinery, in fact, that good health seems anything but simple. I'm here to tell you: It is simple.

    Forget cholesterol counts. Forget calories and fat grams. Forget blood pressure, blood sugar, hormone levels, or any of the other markers of health you're used to at the doctor's office. It turns out that the single measurement most important to your health is the pH of your blood and tissues—how acidic or alkaline it is. Different areas of the body have different ideal pH levels, but blood pH is the most telling of all. Just as your body temperature is rigidly regulated, the blood must be kept in a very narrow pH range—mildly basic or alkaline. The body will go to great lengths to preserve that, including wreaking havoc on other tissues or systems.

    The pH level of our internal fluids affects every cell in our bodies. The entire metabolic process depends on an alkaline environment. Chronic over acidity corrodes body tissue, and if left unchecked will interrupt all cellular activities and functions, from the beating of your heart to the neural firing of your brain. In other words, over acidity interferes with life itself. It is (as we'll see in more detail in the next chapter) at the root of all sickness and disease.

    If that's not enough to get you interested in balancing your body pH naturally, nondestructively, keep this in mind: Over acidity is also what's keeping you fat (more about that later).

    The goal, then — and what this program allows you to do — is to create the proper alkaline balance within your body. The way to do that is by eating the proper balance of alkaline and acid foods. That means 80 percent of your diet must be alkalizing foods, like green vegetables. (That percentage will go down somewhat once you've successfully rebalanced yourself.) That leaves much smaller portions of acid foods (such as meat and grains) on our plates. In addition, carefully chosen, high-quality supplements will help you achieve and maintain pH balance. You'll learn more about all this in detail in later chapters.

    That's it. That's all there is to it. Get at least three-quarters of your plate covered with alkalizing food, use the supplements as explained in The pH Miracle, and you'll be good to go.

    The following chapters get into the details of why, and the remainder of the book shows you specifically what and how. You'll get the benefit of my own exhaustive research and the work of the great minds that have gone this road before me, and you'll also get Shelley's real-life, practical expertise in how to make all this happen for you.

    Over and over again, we've witnessed joy, relief, and renewed peace of mind in those who have turned a serious or chronic illness around, those who lost weight they had been battling for years, those whose cholesterol levels dropped, skin cleared up, itching stopped, energy returned. I've seen people who no longer required insulin injections for their diabetes. People whose aches and pains disappeared. Even people who had been diagnosed with cancer whose tumors vanished and who were pronounced cancer free. We hear frequently from people who haven't been able to work for months or years who are returning to work, people whose allergies are letting up, people whose infections clear. People who are well, whole, and energetic again. People like Sharon and her husband. I'll let her tell their story:

    I was up to a record 192 pounds. I was depressed and tired and had attempted almost every diet known to humankind. I would lose weight and then gain it right back when I returned to my old eating habits. I became more and more discouraged. I was sick and tired of being sick and tired—and fat! I knew it was time to make some major lifestyle changes.

    So, once again I stepped onto the diet roller coaster by going to a local weight loss organization. It worked for the first few months. I lost thirty-two pounds, traded in my diet sodas for water, and started to exercise. I thought I might really have the problem licked this time.

    At this same time, my husband applied for a life insurance policy. The findings of the company's physical exam scared us to death. His cholesterol was practically off the charts at 340. He had fatty growths in his shoulder. He was at his heaviest ever, too: 227 pounds. For someone who is five-nine, that's quite a load to carry around. The report made him out to be a walking time bomb. An accident waiting to happen. Just like me, he realized he needed to make some serious changes. But he was confused about what and how.

    Before he could take action, we moved into a new house and went on a vacation. I went back to my old eating habits, stopped exercising, and regained twenty of the thirty-two pounds I had lost. When things settled down again and we realized we had to take action, that's when The pH Miracle came into our lives.

    We shared the same first thought: How on earth could we change our lifestyle so drastically? And the same second thought: We had to try. That night we committed to the program—and immediately headed over to a favorite local restaurant to pig out on our last barbecued pork ribs and mud pie. The next morning we changed our diets— and changed our lives. We've never looked back.

    My husband's cholesterol dropped to 242 in six weeks, and is now under 200. He had been experiencing arthritis in the hips and had been thinking about surgery. But the pain has disappeared! For the first time in my life, I'm not depressed. I'm no longer a compulsive eater; no longer do I eat until I get sick—and then eat some more. I'm not a slave to my addiction to sugar and breads. Now the foods I crave are avocados and soybeans. We both would still like to lose a few more pounds, but we don't worry about it anymore. We know our bodies will reach an optimum weight. And we'll never regain it because we no longer crave the foods that made us sick, tired, and fat in the first place.

    It turns out the weight loss is almost a side benefit. What we've really gotten out of this is feeling better. Our minds and bodies are stronger. We no longer feel sick and tired all the time. Even our relationship has benefited. We have a more fulfilling life. We can more fully enjoy the best things in life—mainly, our kids.

    Speaking of our kids, we are now gradually working them into the program, too. They've been raised on fast food and pizza, candy bars and soda pop. And they've been addicted to sugar, bread, and meat—and been tired, obese, and depressed as a result, just like so much of their generation. Who would have thought they would ever be drinking green vegetable juice for breakfast? We feed them healthy meals, and they take supplements as well. They still have some sugar now and then, but we know this is not an overnight process. The whole family is headed in the right direction.

    Robert Louis Stevenson wrote: "There will come a time when we will sit down to the banquet of our consequences."
    We were. And we are. I like this way much better.

    Besides the huge volume of tales like this one — which I'll share more of throughout the book — I've seen the scientific proof of such transformation with my own eyes, though nothing is more persuasive than the radical changes in people's everyday lives. I've observed thousands of blood samples, including pH levels, from people all over the world, and seen the transformation that occurs — right down to the individual cells—when people change the way they eat.

    HOW WE CAME TO EAT THIS WAY

    All this healing occurs because people are willing to take responsibility for their own health and make the necessary changes. That was a mission Shelley and I were on for ourselves starting over twenty years ago. But it took quite a while to realize that what seemed in popular thought to be optimal was still leaving us tired, seemingly prone to every passing cold, and just not able to get the very best out of life. Eventually, through trial and error—experimenting on ourselves—we developed The pH Miracle program, and found, finally, the way to get fully, permanently, holistically healthy-physically prepared to live life to its fullest.

    We had always been active, and on the lookout for ways to improve our health. By 1980, we were on what we thought was an ideal strictly vegetarian regime-mostly complex carbohydrates, along with some simple carbs (sugars), proteins, and fats. We were conforming to what seemed to be the best possible nutrition for our bodies and raised our children this way.

    We ate the best of all foods sold in our favorite health food stores. Yet still we felt that afternoon fatigue. Our athletic endurance seemed to have plateaued, and we weren't getting any further improvements. We didn't have the strength and stamina we wanted. We were slowly but surely getting one common sign of aging after another. And it all seemed to be getting worse as we grew older.

    What we didn't know then was what havoc all this was wreaking on our body chemistry, how it dangerously acidified our bodies, inviting all the disastrous consequences explained in upcoming chapters. Thank goodness the whole family had stayed generally healthy, but with what we know now we can see we were lucky. We were setting ourselves up for a lot of potential trouble.

    It took a long time to realize what was going on—and what we could do about it. When we did figure it all out, what a dramatic difference! For one thing, though neither of us was overweight to begin with, we both shed pounds. I lost about twenty pounds — and four inches around my waist. Shelley dropped about fifteen pounds, and is now the same size she was in high school (nine). More important, we felt much better. Not only that, but I also could see astounding changes in our blood, including the pH levels. One good thing about the roughly fourteen-year journey we went through in developing this program was that it gave me time to come to some new (to me) laboratory techniques with which I could chart our progress (which I'll describe more fully later in the book).

    Since we were essentially healthy to start out with, I was eager to test the effects of the dietary changes we were making on people facing serious health challenges, such as diabetes, cancer, obesity, heart disease, lupus, gout, and arthritis. Sure enough, in my studies I could see the same sweeping improvements in their blood. They all reported feeling better and losing weight. And in many cases, even the dire conditions healed or disappeared! Witnessing these amazing results, I knew we'd stumbled upon more than a way of eating that just happened to be right for us and our family. We'd found something we wanted to share.

    We've been fully on The pH Miracle diet for more than five years now, and there's no doubt in our minds: We'll never go back. We've gained too much we'd never want to give up. Even as we get older, we keep feeling better. And we know we're protecting ourselves from the ravages of the diseases that claim so many of our fellow Americans. We've found a way to ensure that we'll be there for each other, for our work, and most of all, for our children, over the long haul. And able to truly enjoy every minute of it.

"This is my third raw food cookbook trial, but only the second one I actually want to use. The first was the Raw 50, which didn't capture my attention, the second was Ani's Raw Food Kitchen, which offers simpler recipes that I found some natural appeal in, and now I find myself with this book in my hands, wishing I had discovered something like it many years ago.

I don't think I am uncommon in my foodie ambitions. I want to eat healthier, enjoy good food, and not feel too restricted by any particular diet. I am intrigued by the raw diet, but nowhere near ready to dive in head first. I currently enjoy a salad and a smoothie almost daily, but raw food is still on the lesser half of my diet. It would be great to start incorporating some more raw snacks and the occasional raw meal, but it seems many raw cookbooks are filled with (numerous) sales pitches for the raw diet and time-consuming recipes instead of practical guides and easy recipes that will safely appeal to newbie taste buds.

The Raw Food Revolution does start by explaining the health benefits of the raw diet, especially from a weight loss perspective. Yet, the book moves on to explain how to get the nutrients you need, the types of food and equipment you will use, and starter menus. All in all, the introduction is 100 pages, and well worth every sentence. Then, the recipes begin .

The recipes are very unintimidating and any potential questions that a newbie or veteran may have about an ingredient or process are addressed right then and there. But, what I found most fascinating about this cookbook is that it truly isn't focused on being 100% raw. The authors encourage and even aid readers in easing into the raw food diet by offering "almost raw" techniques and emphasizing that it isn't essential to demand that every single ingredient is raw, particularly when first starting out. For this reason, the recipes are not surprisingly a bit more appealing from both a taste and preparation perspective.

I just recently received the book, but have already ear-marked at least thirty recipes that I want to trial. On the tops of that list are the Mangoes in Lemon-Ginger Sauce, Basic Nut Cheese, Apples and Walnuts on Baby Greens w/ Poppy Seed Dressing, Broccoli with Bon Bon Sauce (I do love broccoli!), Figgie Nutins' and Carob-Banana Pudding. I immediately made the Banana Endurance Drink, which according to the author balances potassium-rich bananas and sodium-rich celery (yeah, celery, but I decided to chance it) to replenish electrolytes and energize muscles. I added a generous dash of nutmeg to my servings, which I think rounded this tasty, yet simple beverage out nicely!

Though many raw cookbooks claim it is okay to gradually become raw, their recipes, tips, and pitches take on 'all or nothing' or nothing air. It was refreshing to discover this nutrition-first cookbook which I am sure will actually help this avid home baker to increase her raw food intake (at least a bit) rather than running in the other direction to a pile of fresh-from-the-oven cookies."

About the Author
Wendy Rudell has spent the last 35 years living a very healthy lifestyle and pursuing her interest in all the healing arts. After working as head chef of a large vegetarian restaurant in British Columbia, Canada, and attaining a teaching degree, she became a coordinator and instructor for a Pritikin program in Maui that focused on reducing the effects of degenerative diseases. From 1984 to 1990, she owned and operated a raw food product manufacturing and distributing company on the the island Kauai.

Returning to the continent, Rudell attained a teacher training degree in Hatha yoga from the Vancouver Yoga Institute and later studied Ashtanga yoga for three years. She graduated from the Arica Institute as a trainer, and became a licensed massage therapist and practiced in Hawaii for 12 years. She also worked as a qualified colon therapist, gourmet raw food chef, and yoga instructor at the Tassa Hanalei Retreat Center on Kauai for 3 years.

How did the debacle start where wholesome, natural treatments were dismissed for chemical medicines? Why is there a moral division as to who has the right answers: orthodox or alternative medicine? And why can’t two roads meet?


Prior to ‘modern medicine’, mankind had only its natural surroundings to derive healing remedies from – and mostly, people survived! The Medicine Man, the Elders and the grandparents knew the secrets; they had the power to care and people sought their wisdom.

Currently the public is readdressing the age old wisdom concerning natural plant therapies. As being revealed by modern science, potent healing properties already exist in everyday fruits, vegetables and herbs, and there are extraordinary benefits obtainable from Superfruits too.


In my career as a Health and Fitness Consultant, I quickly changed from merely instructing people to get fit, to actually educating them why they should get healthy.
